About Giving With Style

Giving With Style is a memorable, fun and festive night out that provides the opportunity to purchase some of the finest, most unique Christmas gifts around.

You will enter the elegantly-decorated showroom at McElheran's Fine Furniture and have the opportunity to sample exceptional wine, cheese, fruit and chocolate pairings. While sipping and enjoying live music – including various cultural selections, piano and jazz – you will be able to peruse the wares of carefully-selected local vendors and participate in a variety of activities, including wine tasting tutorials and dance lessons. Giving With Style will also host local visual artists, offering you the opportunity to purchase, or simply enjoy, beautiful works in a variety of styles and mediums. Other vendors include high-quality jewellery; fair-trade coffee, tea and chocolate selections. Best of all, you can enjoy all of this while supporting two incredible causes. All proceeds will go to Hand Up Leadership Development Foundation and the Youth Empowerment and Support Service (formerly the Youth Emergency Shelter). By Christmas shopping with your friends in style, you will be giving youth, both locally and globally, the chance to excel.

The Leadership Development Program

Picture
Hand Up (a program of Youth Unlimited) partners with local agencies in the Philippines and Burundi to provide young people with great potential post-secondary scholarships, mentorship and community service opportunities.

Young people, who do not otherwise have the chance to attend post-secondary school, are given everything they need to be successful: tuition, books, transportation and, in some cases, food. Each situation is unique. But school is not enough. Each young leader is also mentored by a local leader and given opportunities to engage in community service projects to better understand the value of giving back. Young leaders sign a contract agreeing to maintain good grades and continue with the program, and to give back to the scholarship fund between five and 10 percent of their income after graduation for the same number of years they received the scholarship. This fosters a sense of independence without burdening students with debt that they may not be able to repay

The vision is to equip locally-trained leaders who can come up with locally-relevant solutions to their country’s problems. Imagine what could happen in a developing country with 10, 50, 100 or even 1000 leaders equipped to help face with challenges and embrace the opportunities of their nation!

The SkY Program

Picture
The SkY program works with youth who have no viable living alternative (i.e. living with relatives, friends or staying at home). The youth in this program also want to make positive changes in their life, and are willing to work hard at making those changes happen.

The SkY program gives youth shelter and offers them a structured program to work, go to school and/or train for vocational occupations. Staff of YESS assist youth in sorting through opportunities and resources, as well as providing them with support and advocacy to enable them to stick to their commitments and get through the program.

Youth in the SkY program also learn important life skills by participating in chores at the Youth Emergency Shelter and learning key aspects of living alone, such as cooking and laundry. YESS also ensures that these youth have balance by providing them with healthy recreation activities like swimming, going to hockey games and snowboarding – many activities that youth in program have never had the opportunity to engage in.

The SkY program makes a short-term investment in these young people’s lives that pays long-term dividends to them and society!
